NAME – Zechariah 6:9-15
Zech. 6:12 says “BRANCH”…who is the BRANCH?
Jeremiah 23:5,6 says BRANCH will be raised to David, called “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (Hebrew YAHWEY [Word for God]”…1 Corinthians 1:30 shows that Jesus became RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Zechariah 3:8-10 says the BRANCH will remove the iniquity [or sin] of the land in one-day…Hebrews 10:11-18 shows that Jesus accomplished this on the cross.
Isaiah 11:1-2 says a BRANCH will grow out of Jesse’s roots. A Jewish source: Targum Isaiah states, “And a King shall come forth from the sons of Jesse, and an Anointed One (or Messiah) from his son’s sons shall grow up. And there shall rest upon him a spirit from before the Lord, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord.” As can be seen, the Jews understood this passage to be Messianic. Isaiah 11:2 states regarding the BRANCH that THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD SHALL REST UPON HIM….Mark 1:9-11 shows that this happened to Jesus after his baptism by John. Isaiah 11:1 shows that another name for the BRANCH is a ROD…Psalm 2:7-9 is clearly Messianic (as these exact words were quoted immediately following Christ’s baptism) and it states that Jesus (the Messiah) would rule the NATIONS WITH A ROD OF IRON. Studying Isaiah 11:1,2, it is clear that the BRANCH describes Jesus.
Zech. 6:13 says “SO HE SHALL BE A PRIEST ON HIS THRONE, AND THE COUNSEL OF PEACE SHALL BE BETWEEN THEM BOTH [OR BOTH OFFICES]”
…Who can be a PRIEST and a KING?
2 Chronicles 26:16-21 shows that according to the Old Testament Law, no one could be both a Priest and King. As a footnote to Zechariah 6:11 in the Spirit Filled Life Bible states, “No high priest in the Old Testament was ever crowned king. While he was allowed to wear a turban, he was forbidden to wear a crown. Thus Joshua clearly prefigures the One who will wear the crown, filling both offices of king and priest.”
Was Jesus a PRIEST and KING?
According to the genealogy of Jesus, he did have the legal rights to the throne of David, making him the legal king. Also, Hebrews 3:1 shows that Christ Jesus is “THE APOSTLE AND HIGH PRIEST OF OUR CONFESSION”. Furthermore, Hebrews 5:5,6 emphatically states that Jesus is “A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK” (this was actually a word for word quotation from Psalm 110:4)…As we can read in Genesis 14:18, MELCHIZEDEK was a KING and PRIEST (a pre-incarnate Jesus according to Scripture). Thus, it is clear that Jesus fulfilled both offices of KING and PRIEST.
It is evident that the BRANCH is regarding JESUS, the CHRIST who will also be KING and PRIEST simultaneously….so what does Zech. 6:12 mean when it quotes The Lord of hosts saying, “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!”???
The MAN who it is referring to is “Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest” as the text of Zech. 6:9-15 makes clear….Is the name of Joshua (the Man referred to) the same as that who was supposed to be the BRANCH (a.k.a. Jesus)?
In the Hebrew JOSHUA is “Yehowshuwa” or “Yehowshua” meaning Jehovah-saved.
The Greek name for JOSHUA is “Iesous” which is JESUS in English.
The prophecy of Zechariah 6 shows that Jesus’ very name was known 500 years before he was born!!!
BIRTHPLACE – Micah 5:2
Micah 5:2 shows that the passage is referring to “RULER OF ISRAEL, WHOSE GOINGS FORTH ARE FROM OLD, FROM EVERLASTING”…in addition to Jesus’ genealogy proving his kingship over Israel, Matthew 27:37 shows Jesus to be labeled “THE KING OF THE JEWS” (Jesus being a king also fulfills the messianic prophecy of Psalm 2:6-9). In regards to the Messiah having his “GOINGS FORTH…FROM EVERLASTING”, Colossians 1:17 states that Jesus was “BEFORE ALL THINGS”. Thus, Micah 5:2 is talking about the Christ (which seems to be fulfilled in Jesus).
The first part of Micah 5:2 says that from “BETHLEHEM EPHRATHAH” the Messiah will come….What do we know about Bethlehem and was Jesus born there?
In speaking of Herod’s slaughter at Bethlehem, John Mcray comments on Bethlehem’s size by saying, “First, Bethlehem was probably no bigger than Nazareth, so how many babies of that age would there be in a village of five hundred or six hundred people? Not thousands, not hundreds, although certainly a few.” (as cited in Strobel, CC).
Luke 2:4-7 (along with Matt. 2:1,4) states that Jesus was indeed born in Bethlehem. In fact, John 7:40-44 records a conversation among a crowd of people who were skeptical of Jesus being the Messiah, because they thought he was born in Galilee, and knew that the Christ was to be from Bethlehem.
Jesus’ very birthplace (a town composed of only a few hundred people) was known 700 years before he was born!!!
YEAR HE WOULD BEGIN HIS MINISTRY – Daniel 9:24-27
The WEEKS Daniel describes are WEEKS OF YEARS…how do we know this?
Daniel 9:2 shows that Daniel was thinking and writing about “THE NUMBER OF THE YEARS” specified by Jeremiah, not weeks.
Week is “shabua” in the Hebrew, literally meaning SEVEN.
Jews were familiar with a “SEVEN” of years (see Leviticus 25:2-4, 8)
Daniel 10:2,3 shows literal days, but different terminology is used in Daniel 9. The only reason for this seems to be that Daniel was describing something different than literal days.
If it was literal WEEKS in Daniel 9, and not WEEKS OF YEARS, absolutely nothing happened in 70 weeks like he said would happen, and therefore Daniel would have to be cast out as a false prophet!
Daniel 9:24 is clearly Messianic, and indicates that the time period predicts Jesus’ ministry.
Daniel 9:25 shows that it will be “SIXTY-TWO WEEKS AND SEVEN WEEKS [62 weeks+7 weeks = 69 weeks] FROM THE GOING FORTH OF THE COMMAND TO RESTORE AND BUILD JERUSALEM UNTIL MESSIAH THE PRINCE COMES”. This shows that it will be 69 weeks of years, or 483 years (weeks = years, as shown above) between Jerusalem being restored and Jesus to be baptized (it wasn’t until he was baptized that he physically became the Messiah, or “anointed one”).
Daniel was using the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah to discover the timing of Jesus’ coming. In Isaiah 45:1-3, 13 we see that it is CYRUS WHO WILL REBUILD JERUSALEM. Also, 2 Chronicles 36:22,23; Ezra 1:1-3; and Ezra 5:13,15 all show that Cyrus decreed the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s temple (and it is clear that if they rebuilt the temple, they would have to build the city to accommodate). In addition to this, Josephus (a Jewish historian) attests that it was Cyrus who rebuilt Jerusalem….So the prophecy from Daniel 9:25 is for the time between Cyrus’s decree until Jesus’ baptism.
ACCORDING TO BIBLICAL CHRONOLOGY, A TIME PERIOD OF EXACTLY 483 YEARS WAS THE TIME BETWEEN CYRUS’S DECREE AND JESUS’S BEGINNING OF HIS MINISTRY!!! This is incredible proof of God’s inspiration!!
THESE 3 PROPHECIES ALONE SHOW THAT JESUS’S NAME, BIRTHPLACE, AND TIME BEGINNING HIS MINISTRY WERE ALL KNOWN MORE THAN 500 YEARS BEFORE HE WAS BORN!!!…THESE 3 FACTS ALONE ALMOST SINGLE OUT JESUS AS THE COMING CHRIST (OR MESSIAH)!
