1 John 5:14-15 says:
If we ask anything according to his [God’s] will…whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
While John 14:13-14 says:
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do…if you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
Not only is the Divine Author the same in both of these passages, but so is the human author. That is, these passages were written by the same God and the same John.
You’ll notice they are virtually identical, with one exception.
Where 1 John 5:14-15 says “according to God’s will”, John 14:13-14 says, “in my name”.
The simple conclusion is that:
- “according to God’s will” = “in Jesus’ name”
If something is in Jesus’ name, it is under His authority, and thus part of His will. So wherever you see that phrase “in my name”, you know that His name carries His authority. And it means under God’s will, ultimately.
