Following Christ in Singleness

I question the way the Western church has addressed the gift of singleness. It just seems, to me, that being single can wrongly make people feel like a second class kingdom citizen.

Further, I’ve wondered if this has contributed in some way to Christians wrongly approving homosexuality and transgender affiliation. By this I mean that–perhaps–we inadvertently treat singleness as a sort of disease to be avoided and this has allowed for “non-traditional remedies,” (such as homosexuality or transgenderism), so long as they help pull people out of singleness.

In either case, in contrast, Paul talks of the great gift of singleness in 1 Cor. 7. Namely, you have more time and energy to dedicate directly to Christ. Thus, we should cherish, not belittle, those gifted with singleness.

So, in saying all this, I get excited about resources that promote the gift of singleness, and I want to pass them onto you all:

  1. Great topic! I’ve dealt with being an “outsider” for years … tho I know friends who are married never meant for me to feel that way. I think the pendulum is swinging to either extreme … either one has to be in a Godly marriage or we should all be accepting of those in ungodly unions. It seems the focus is on the kind of relationship someone is in and not the person. Whether married or single, the Lord deals with heart issues because out of the heart come the issues of life.
