I recently read Will Metzger’s, Tell The Truth: The Whole Gospel Wholly by Grace Communicated Truthfully & Lovingly (4th Ed., 2012). I thought there were some incredible insights into evangelism and the nature and heart of God…and would highly recommend this book to everyone (1 caveat: there is no mention of Spiritual gifts being used to express the gospel, though the N.T. preachers clearly incorporated them in their preaching–see Scriptures like Rom. 15:18-19; 1 Cor. 2:1-5; Heb. 2:3-4). Finally, as a result of reading this book, I have been very convicted by my own depravity and sinfulness in light of the awe-filled God we serve. Specifically, I was sadly shocked when I realized how much I sounded like the, “proud, unbroken people,” according to a chart he provided. I repent.
…I’ve been thinking all day about the bruises, and scars, and piercings, and floggings that Jesus took. And how every wound represents a million different sins I’ve committed in my heart, mind, soul, and strength. BUT ALSO…how He took those wounds and died that death on my account…THUS…I would offend God and His sacrifice to not let Jesus’ final words on the cross be God’s verdict over my sins and sinfulness: “It is finished”. I am convinced that we have only scratched the surface in seeing our sinfulness and terror in light of God’s holiness. And, as a result, we know so little of God’s goodness and grace in forgiving us and dying our death, so that we could live in His eternal life (…available to all who turn to Jesus as Master, and trust Him and His finished work).
